The Form Building Giant’s Claim To Fame

For the form building company came about in 2006 when the founder decided he was sick of coding forms. By 2013 the Jotform had grown to one million worldwide users and 2016 that number doubled.

In 2017 the company took the next level and grew into the platform we see today. The company hangs its hat on being a robust way to create forms and collect data. Today the platform serves over 20 million users ranging from nonprofits to educational institutions.

This week we tested the platform and were able to draw a few conclusions. One is that the app is one of the best on the market. And second is that you can tell the company believes in their product.

Functionality

Once you are signed in, you are greeted with a few tabs. This will include folders for your forms, your teams that you can create, drafts, assigned forms, and forms that were shared with you.

The platform has six sections: Forms, Tables, Reports, Approvals, Apps, and Sign Documents.

Forms will be for things like order forms, contact forms, registration forms, etc. When in the form editor, you have available to you form elements. Everything you’d want is already prebuilt in, including integrations.

Next are tables. When you create a form, you automatically create a table in which the filled-in fields populate. You have the option to add a new tab, which leads right into reports.

Reports exist to “export” the data from the tables. Reports can be dashboards, digest emails, Excel and CSV exports, and even calendar listings. You can choose to create a form with an existing form or import data from an external file.

When the initial report is created, you will be given what looks like an interactive presentation where the data from the forms are visualized automatically.

The approvals tab exists to set up simple or complex approval hierarchies. You can add full team approvals, signatures, conditional logic, and even PDF copies.

Next, we have apps. This can create full forms with multiple different kinds of forms. And when you select a template, it automatically generates those forms for you. Think of apps as the endgame for all of form building.

Jotform has at least 150+ integrations, as well as thousands of templates to choose from. Of course, Jotform also has tons of support with forums, webinars, documentation, and customer service.

Performance

While using the entire workflow, I experienced lightning-fast performance, which is unexpected. With how much that needs to load, especially when you add data, I expected a slight delay at times. However, I only experienced the best performance.

I must be visiting at good times, however, because according to their status page, there have been some hiccups over the last few months.

User Interface

I am highly impressed with the user interface. I didn’t have any expectations for software like this, but it feels like a child could very easily build a workflow from start to finish.

Very quickly, I realized that the options are laid out in order and one thing leads to the next. You would be surprised how many tools in general don’t think of that. But because I have that now, that will be the bar.

When creating anything, the app is full of descriptions that fit the UI. You all know I love that. The platform presents as someone who thought of everything and didn’t forget the app’s core along the way.

Innovation

For this section of tech, I found there isn’t much to innovate, but Jotform has done it. Breaking down every part of document generation into different sections that all work together will again be something I look out for now.

Something needs to be said about the amount of templates. Some of these templates have to be getting used maybe once but they made sure the user had it all. As a consumer, I appreciate the dedication.

I think the Apps tab is great. It is something that isn’t normally added but it allows a less creative individual to develop with no coding experience and feel like a software engineer for a day.

Versus The Field

competitor

PandaDoc

The Better Rating: 92/100

Highlights:
  • Drag and drop editing
  • Real-time versioning
  • Top tier security

I think Jotform wins the pricing war. They have a lucrative free tier as well as more immediate tiers.

Both offer HIPAA compliance as a service if you spend enough. One thing I believe PAndaDoc excels at is unlimited seats. Jotform is one user unless you pay for the premium tiers.

Jotform is form-building at the core, so it is offered at every level. PandaDoc has it optional at a cost. Jotform is also head and heels above the competition in integrations.

Ease Of Use

The workflow streamline being broken down into different sections is why I believe they have potentially curated the best UI on the market. I believe you could put this app in anyone’s hands, and they’d understand it quickly.

Likes And Dislikes

I love the number of templates and that there is so much offered at the free tier. I believe that most users will be satisfied at the free level.

If I must choose a dislike, I don’t love form limits. For instance, at the free tier, you may try to build an app and be met with disappointment when you only have 5 forms to work with.

At The End Of The Day…

Jotform is everything I would want form building and document generation to be. Seamless integrations and easy-to-use editing make this the app to beat in my eyes. Because there are so many tiers, I think the app is perfect for individuals up to large corporations. If you want to increase productivity in HR or even CRM and sales roles, this is the tool to grab.
